Republic Day & Independence Day at Work: Office Celebration Merchandise That Respects the Flag Code
Office ideas for Republic Day and Independence Day, what the Flag Code and 1971 Act allow on merchandise, and when to order badges, lanyards, tees and certificates.

Republic Day and Independence Day are two of the easiest days in the year to bring a whole office together, and the merchandise you hand out sets the tone. The short answer: keep kits logo-led with tricolour-inspired colours, never use the National Flag on anything worn below the waist or on napkins, cushions or dress material, and never print anything on the flag itself. This guide covers what the law says, which items work best (badges, lanyards, caps, tees and certificates) and when to order for January and August 2027.
Republic Day celebration ideas for the office: what is appropriate
The best national day events at work are short, dignified and open to everyone, from the leadership team to housekeeping staff. They mark the day and celebrate your people without turning it into a sales moment.
Ideas that work well in Indian offices:
- Morning flag-hoisting at the campus or building, followed by the National Anthem
- A quiz on the Constitution for Republic Day, or on the freedom movement for Independence Day
- Poster, essay or speech competitions, with certificates for winners
- An ethnic wear or tricolour colour day, where teams dress in saffron, white or green
- A volunteering hour or donation drive, which keeps the focus on service
- A team breakfast or lunch after the ceremony
Merchandise fits into most of these: badges and lanyards for the event itself, tees for a team photo, certificates for competitions and a small keepsake for everyone. One rule runs through all of it: the merchandise should celebrate the day and your team, not use the National Flag as decoration.
The Flag Code and the 1971 Act: basics every merchandise order should check
Two documents matter here, and buyers often mix them up. The Flag Code of India, 2002 mainly governs how the flag is displayed and hoisted. The rules that matter most for printed merchandise sit in the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, in its Explanation 4.
According to the Act's text published by the Ministry of Home Affairs and on India Code, with the wording introduced by the 2005 amendment (available from PRS India), disrespect to the flag includes:
- Using the flag "as a portion of costume, uniform or accessory of any description which is worn below the waist of any person"
- Embroidering or printing it "on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, undergarments or any dress material"
- "Putting any kind of inscription upon the Indian National Flag"
What this means for your order
- No flag on lower-body wear. Track pants, shorts, sarongs and socks are out.
- No flag on napkins, cushions or handkerchiefs. These are named in the Act.
- Nothing written on the flag. Your logo, a slogan or a date placed on top of the flag counts as an inscription.
- Treat "dress material" with caution. The wording is broad, so our advice is not to reproduce the National Flag itself on apparel at all. Use tricolour-inspired colours and your logo instead.
The Flag Code has also been updated.
Tricolour-themed vs logo-led merchandise: which to choose
There are three broad ways to design national day merchandise, and they carry very different levels of risk.
- A reproduction of the National Flag (three bands with the Ashoka Chakra). We recommend avoiding this on merchandise altogether, given the restrictions above.
- Tricolour-inspired design. Saffron, white and green used as colour accents, stripes or a border, without recreating the flag. This gives a festive feel while staying clear of the flag itself.
- Logo-led design. Your company logo, with a short line such as the occasion and year, on a clean base. This is the safest choice and the most reusable after the day.
For most offices, the sweet spot is logo-led with tricolour accents. A white tee with your logo and a thin saffron-and-green line gets worn again on weekends; a tee covered in flag graphics often goes straight into a drawer.
Simple design rules we follow
- Keep your logo separate from any tricolour element, never on top of it
- Leave the Ashoka Chakra out of merchandise designs
- Skip tricolour designs on items that get wiped, sat on or thrown away, such as napkins, cushions, table runners and disposable plates
- Check every mockup with the question: would anyone see this as the flag being used as decoration?
You can try your logo with different colour accents on our Mockup Studio before you request a quote.
The event-day kit: badges, lanyards and caps
For the day itself, three small items do most of the work. They are inexpensive, quick to hand out and visible in every group photo. You can see the full range in Event & Print Essentials.
Pin back badges
A badge is the simplest way to put everyone in the same spirit. Our Pin Back Button Badge is printed by sublimation, which handles full-colour logos and fine colour gradients well, so a logo with a saffron-and-green ring around it prints cleanly.

Lanyards
If you have visitors, guests or a large campus event, lanyards double as identification. The Multicolour Lanyards are also printed by sublimation along the full strap, so you can repeat your logo with tricolour-inspired colour blocks between each repeat. They are worn around the neck, and a logo-led design can keep working as an ID lanyard after the day.

Caps for outdoor flag-hoisting
Morning ceremonies on a terrace or open campus can be bright even in January, and they are hot and humid in August. The Premium Cotton Cap is branded with DTF printing, which suits a multi-colour logo on the front panel. A white or off-white cap with a small coloured logo looks smart in photos.
Tees for the office celebration: DTF on a white base
A matching tee turns a scattered crowd into one team in the photo. For national days, a white base is the natural choice: it pairs with saffron and green accents and works with almost any logo colour.
The Round Neck Cotton T-Shirt - 180 GSM is our everyday choice for this. It is branded with DTF printing, which reproduces multi-colour artwork with good detail, so a full-colour logo plus a thin tricolour-inspired line prints well.

Keep these points in mind:
- Tops only. Never put tricolour or flag elements on lower-body clothing.
- No flag, no inscription on a flag. Use colours and your logo, as covered above.
- Collect sizes early. Missing size lists are a common cause of delay, so send a form to teams as soon as the event is confirmed.
- Think about reuse. A subtle design with a small occasion line gets worn far more often than a loud one.

Certificates for quiz and competition winners
Competitions are the heart of many office celebrations, and a proper certificate makes a win feel real. A printed certificate with your logo also gives winners something to keep or pin up at their desk.
Our Custom Certificates - A4/ A5 are produced with digital printing, which suits full-colour layouts. A practical design for national days includes:
- Your logo at the top
- The event name, for example the office Republic Day quiz
- A category line: winner, runner-up, participation
- A blank line for the winner's name and a space for signatures
- A thin saffron, white and green border, kept as a colour border rather than a flag
Leaving the name line blank lets you print before results are announced. The head of the office can then sign and fill them in on the day. A4 suits framing; A5 is easier to hand out in larger numbers for participation certificates.
Keepsakes and ready-made packs for the whole team
If you want everyone to take something home, a mug is the classic choice. The White Coffee Mug A++ Grade - 325ml is printed by sublimation, so a full-colour logo with tricolour-inspired accents comes out bright on the white body. As with every item here, keep it to your logo and colours, not the flag itself.
For a fuller kit, a logo-led pack saves you from picking item by item. The Company Culture Pack brings together a round neck tee, cotton tote, steel bottle, white mug, cap and notepad in a magnetic gift box. Your logo goes on the tee, tote, bottle, mug and cap, and the pack works just as well for onboarding later in the year.

You can browse more ready-made combinations on our preset packs page. You can also put together your own mix of badge, lanyard, tee and mug with Build Your Box. Packs are priced item by item, and most products carry bulk discounts of 3 % at 25+ units, 5 % at 50+, 7 % at 100+ and 10 % at 200+.
Planning: two order windows a year (late December and July)
National days arrive on a fixed date, so the only real risk is ordering too late. Production takes 7–10 business days after mockup approval, and delivery takes 2–4 business days by air or 5–9 business days by surface. Work backwards from the day you want stock in hand, not the day of the event.
Republic Day 2027: Tuesday, 26 January
The office is usually closed on the day. Many teams therefore hold flag-hoisting on the morning itself and the team event on the last working day before. Aim to have stock delivered by Friday 22 January.
- Surface delivery: approve your mockup by around 24 December
- Air delivery: approve your mockup by Monday 4 January at the latest
- Year-end leave and the New Year holiday slow approvals on your side, so share logos and size lists before Christmas
Independence Day 2027: Sunday, 15 August
Because the day falls on a Sunday, most offices will celebrate on Friday 13 August or Monday 16 August. Plan for the earlier date.
- Surface delivery: approve your mockup by mid-July
- Air delivery: approve your mockup by around 22 July
- Tee sizes must be final before you approve the mockup, so collect size lists in early July
Express production is available only on selected items, so if you are short on time, ask us before you plan around it.
A pre-order checklist for national day merchandise
Before you send the order, run through this list:
- No flag reproduction on any item; tricolour colours only as accents
- Nothing printed on or over a flag element, including your logo
- No tricolour design on lower-body wear, napkins, cushions or handkerchiefs
- Current text of the 1971 Act checked on India Code, or a quick word with your compliance team
- Final headcount, plus a few spares for new joiners and guests
- Size list collected for tees
- Mockup approved inside the right window:
- Republic Day: around 24 December for surface, 4 January for air
- Independence Day: mid-July for surface, around 22 July for air
- Delivery address and a named receiver at each office

Frequently asked questions
Can we print the tricolour on employee T-shirts or caps?
The 1971 Act bars the flag on anything worn below the waist and on dress material, among other items, and the dress material wording is broad. Our advice is not to reproduce the National Flag on apparel at all. Use your logo with saffron, white and green colour accents on a white tee or cap instead, which looks festive and stays clear of the restrictions.
Can our company logo go on or next to the flag?
Not on it. The Act treats putting any kind of inscription on the National Flag as disrespect, and a logo on the flag counts. Keep your logo separate from any tricolour element in the design, and do not place logos on the flag displayed at your event.
Are tricolour napkins, cushions or table runners okay for the office event?
The Act specifically names printing the flag on cushions, handkerchiefs and napkins, so avoid them. As good practice, we also suggest skipping tricolour designs on table runners, disposable plates and anything else that gets wiped, sat on or thrown away. Plain décor in saffron, white and green is a safer way to set the mood.
Is a polyester flag acceptable for the office flag-hoisting?
According to Business Standard, a December 2021 order amending the Flag Code permitted machine-made polyester flags.
