Printed Coffee Mugs for Office: Ceramic Sublimation vs Insulated Steel

Desk mug or commute mug? How ceramic sublimation compares with laser/UV on insulated steel, why the 175ml chai cup matters, and what to order for your team.

The right printed mugs for office use depend on one question: will the mug stay on a desk or travel in a bag? For desks and pantries, a ceramic mug with sublimation printing gives full-colour branding at a low cost per unit. Commuters, field staff and hybrid teams are better served by an insulated steel mug with a laser or UV logo. This guide compares the two, explains when a 175ml chai cup beats a 325ml coffee mug, and covers care, artwork, discounts and timelines so you can order with confidence.

Desk mug or commute mug: start with where it will be used

Mug orders often go wrong when the buyer picks the mug before deciding where it will live. A ceramic mug that travels in a backpack chips. A steel travel mug that only ever sees the pantry kettle is more mug than the job needs.

Ask these four questions before you shortlist anything:

- Where will it be used? Desk, pantry, meeting room, car, site visit or home office.

- What goes in it? Office chai, filter coffee, green tea or cold coffee on the way in.

- Who is receiving it? New joiners, the whole team, clients or event attendees.

- How visible should the logo be? Full-colour brand artwork, or a subtle mark that looks premium.

As a rule of thumb, ceramic sublimation mugs suit people who work from a fixed desk, and insulated steel mugs suit people who move. If your team is split, consider ceramic for the office kit and steel for the remote or field kit. You can browse both families together in our Drinkware category.

How sublimation mug printing works on ceramic

All the ceramic mugs in our catalogue are branded with sublimation. That matters for how the logo looks and how long it holds up in daily use.

Why the special coating matters

Sublimation does not work on plain ceramic. According to Joto Imaging Supplies, a sublimation mug has a special polymer coating that bonds with sublimation ink under heat. A regular ceramic mug has no coating, so the ink simply will not transfer.

Because the ink is transferred as a printed image, sublimation handles full-colour logos, gradients and detailed artwork well. This is why it is the usual method for branded ceramic mugs, coasters and similar items.

White, black and coloured mugs

The White Coffee Mug A++ Grade - 325ml is the safest choice for brand colours. A white surface reproduces your palette most faithfully, so if your logo has precise reds, blues or greens, start here.

The Black Coffee Mug A++ Grade looks sharper on a desk and hides tea stains better, but it needs a design check. According to teelaunch, a US print-on-demand blog, many black sublimation mugs are black on the handle, rim, base and inside, with a white print area that is filled with your artwork plus black ink. Any white in your design is just the white base showing through. The same source says simple, bold designs work better because the black fill can bleed.

Chai cup or coffee mug: 175ml vs 325ml for Indian offices

Most corporate mug guides assume everyone drinks large coffees. In India, tea is the everyday drink, and that changes the ideal size.

According to a Tea Board India consumption study, per-person tea consumption across Indian states is about 840 grams a year: roughly 797 g in rural India and 925 g in urban India. The same study found that more than 90% of respondents prefer tea before or with breakfast, and over 80% prefer it with milk and sugar. That points to small cups of milky, sweet chai rather than large black coffees, which is exactly what a chai-size cup is built for.

When the 175ml chai cup wins

The White Tea Mug A++ Grade - 175ml is sized for a proper cup of office chai, not a bucket of it. It works well for:

- Pantry and canteen sets, where the office attendant or tea vendor serves rounds.

- Meeting rooms and client lounges, where a branded cup appears in every discussion.

- Teams that drink several small cups a day rather than one large one.

When the 325ml coffee mug wins

The 325ml mugs suit coffee drinkers, people who brew once and sip through a long stand-up, and anyone who likes a larger tea. They also give you a bigger surface for the logo, which helps if your artwork includes a tagline.

You can also order both: chai cups for the pantry and meeting rooms, and coffee mugs for individual desks.

Insulated steel coffee mugs: laser or UV branding

Steel mugs are branded differently from ceramic. Our insulated steel drinkware is marked with laser or UV printing, and the choice depends on your logo.

- Laser marking etches the logo into the surface finish. It is single-tone, usually showing the metal or a lighter shade through the coating, and there is no ink layer on top. It reads as understated and premium, which suits monochrome logos and senior or client gifts.

- UV printing applies ink that is cured instantly with UV light. It lets you reproduce brand colours on the steel, which suits colourful logos and campaign artwork.

If your logo depends on colour to be recognisable, choose UV. If it works in a single tone, laser gives a cleaner, more executive look. Our printing types page shows how each method looks on different materials.

Which steel mug for which team

The Insulated Double Wall Coffee Mug with Lid is the all-rounder. It has a lid for the walk from pantry to desk, double-wall construction, and a familiar mug shape for home-office desks.

For people who commute, drive to client sites or travel, the Steel Travel Mug with Lid & Handle – Black is the more practical shape, and the black finish takes a laser mark well.

Microwave and dishwasher care: what to tell your employees

This is the question employees ask first, and the honest answer is that sources disagree on printed ceramic mugs.

- According to Orca Coatings, mugs with its coating are dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe, except those with metal material, such as plated and glitter mugs.

- A Chinese mug manufacturer, ceramic-mug.cn, says the opposite: sublimation mugs are not suitable for dishwashers and microwave ovens.

- Another supplier, Topsub, says it depends on the quality and craftsmanship of the mug. It suggests the top rack of the dishwasher or handwashing to keep the print bright.

Given that disagreement, our practical advice is simple:

- Hand-wash printed ceramic mugs with a soft sponge to keep the logo vivid for longer.

- Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the print area.

- Keep insulated steel mugs out of the microwave. Treat them as not microwave-safe unless the product's care note says otherwise, and hand-wash them, especially the lid.

- Follow the care note for the specific product rather than a blanket rule.

If you are including mugs in a welcome kit, add one line of care advice to the welcome card. It costs nothing and saves you a Slack thread of 'can I microwave this?' questions in week one.

Getting your logo artwork right for mugs

A mug is a small, curved surface, and artwork that looks great on a letterhead can look cramped on a cup. A few checks help:

- Send a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) if you have one; otherwise a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background.

- Keep taglines short. Fine text can blur on a 175ml cup and lose detail in a laser mark.

- Plan for dark mugs. On black ceramic or black steel, a white-heavy logo may need a reversed or simplified version.

- Tell us the placement. Say whether you want the logo on one side, both sides or as a wrap design; the mockup confirms what is possible on that mug.

Every order starts with a digital mockup that you approve before production begins. If you want to test ideas first, upload your logo to our Mockup Studio and see it on the mugs yourself before sending a brief.

Bulk pricing, discounts and timelines for branded mugs

Every listed price on our site includes standard logo branding and excludes GST, and every order comes with a GST invoice. Every mug covered in this guide, ceramic and steel, sits in the under ₹500 band per unit. That makes mugs work as a standalone gift or as the anchor of a larger kit.

Bulk discounts on mugs follow our standard slabs:

- 3% on 25+ units

- 5% on 50+ units

- 7% on 100+ units

- 10% on 200+ units

Production takes 7–10 business days after mockup approval. Delivery then takes 2–4 business days by air or 5–9 business days by surface, pan-India. Express production is possible on selected items only, so ask us before you lock an event date.

With campus joiners arriving in the coming months and the new financial year's budgets now open, May and June are a good time to place a mug order for onboarding batches, rather than waiting for the Diwali rush.

Mugs in welcome kits and desk packs

A mug on its own is a nice gesture. Inside a thoughtful kit, it becomes part of someone's daily routine from their first week. If you are building onboarding kits, our onboarding kit checklist explains how drinkware fits alongside stationery and tech.

The Welcome Wagon Pack puts a black ceramic mug next to a steel water bottle, notebook, touch pen, mouse pad, keychain, chocolate, laptop stickers and a welcome card in a magnetic box. It covers both the desk and the commute in one kit.

Product Card: Welcome Wagon Pack

For desk-heavy roles, the Desk Deluxe Pack pairs the 325ml white mug with a wooden desk organiser, laptop stand, mobile stand, thermal bottle, notebook and metal pen. The Desk Delight Pack is another desk-focused option built around the black mug.

A few practical notes on kits:

- Packs are priced item by item, so swapping one mug for another changes the total.

- Gourmet items, candles and packaging are add-ons, sold only together with at least one other product. A mug plus a magnetic box and chocolates works; the box alone does not.

- Gourmet items have no bulk discount, even when the rest of the kit qualifies.

See all ready-made kits on our preset packs page, or ask us to build a custom kit around a single mug.

Frequently asked questions

Are printed ceramic mugs microwave and dishwasher safe?

Sources disagree. Some coating makers say sublimation mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe, while some manufacturers say they are not. To keep the logo bright, we recommend hand-washing and following the care note for the specific mug. Keep insulated steel mugs out of the microwave.

Can a white logo print on a black ceramic mug?

On many black sublimation mugs, the white parts of a design are simply the white base of the print area showing through, rather than white ink. Bold, simple logos work best. We confirm exactly how your artwork will look on our black mug in the digital mockup before production.

Laser or UV on a steel mug: which should we choose?

Choose laser for a single-tone, understated mark with no ink layer on the surface; it suits monochrome logos and premium gifts. Choose UV when your logo needs its brand colours. Either way, hand-washing and avoiding abrasive scrubbers helps the branding last.

Should we order 175ml chai cups or 325ml coffee mugs?

For pantry rounds, meeting rooms and teams that drink several small cups of chai, the 175ml cup is the better fit. For coffee drinkers and individual desks, choose 325ml. You can also order both and brand them identically.

How long does a bulk mug order take?

Production takes 7–10 business days after you approve the mockup.
